Dolores Altea Lapinid, Marikina City, Philippines

The Sunflower
At sunrise, my face is radiantly smiling
greeting everyone a pleasant morning.
Wearing my bright yellow attire
which makes onlookers want to desire.
Every day, I’m here in the city
Inhaling modern life's toxicity
Sometimes my eyes become teary.
Due to pollutants’ intensity.
I have no right to complain
for I've been planted in this domain.
Even if it rains
the poisons I receive still remain.
How l wish l were planted in the countryside
where l can feel nature by my side.
I can breathe freely without any hesitation,
for l am far away from pollution.
My beautiful face is always facing the sun,
which gives me chlorophyll and lots of fun.
Here my flowers are Big and adorable,
and my green leaves are lush and beautiful.
How I wish that l will always be here on the farm
in the company of bees and butterflies, who delight me with their charms.
And please don't put me in a vase.
After a few days, l will be dried and thrown to the waste.
Many people think that I’m always happy.
Sometimes, deep inside l am lonely.
Whether rain or shine
I always have to look fine.
I am thankful to the Almighty that I am a sunflower.
People will always remember my sweet smiles forever.
